Fort Micro #13 Fort Darnett |
I love getting out on the water. This time I left "Amberel" at home and took the inflatable dinghy a couple of miles out into the Medway Estuary. It's quite surprising, but great news, that places like this old fort remain accessible. One of the top TOP CACHES.

Fort Micro #8 Grain Tower Battery |
Another one of the very best of the best, and one of the very few TOP CACHE awards for a cache I hadn't found - two DNFs, a year apart, and both late in the day. But another year on, a third visit, and a long and most determined search, meant I was able finally to add it to my "found it" list :-) . What a moody and desolate place, the most atmospheric of any cache location I've visited, a truly awesome place for a cache.

More fantastic climbing caches, this time VERY high, and with an unusual twist :-) . The cache owner and mpw246pl "helped", where "help" is a euphemism for doing all the hard bits :-) . I did have to get to the cache, but lacked the skills and equipment to manage by myself. I marvel at the abilities of those who can set and reach these caches unaided, and am so grateful for the help that means I can share their experiences. P.S. as a result of these experiences I do now have some of the skills required, and this is largely due to the training I received on this cache, "Under Flock & Key" and others.

Not just any old TOP CACHE, but one of my best caches ever. With the expert assistance of Purple Pineapple and Merstham Mafia I overcame my fear of heights to abseil to this cache. At one point I thought I'd never get back up again, but eventually I dragged myself to the top. I was too scared really to enjoy it, but I'm chuffed that I've done it. I'm not likely to do anything like that again (that's what I said at the time, but I've actually now done loads of things like it :-) ), but it's a cache I'll never forget.

After having used my climbing gear for the first time on Squirrel's Skylight, but accompanied by someone else, I found myself driving home past this cache. Medway Canoe Trail |
A superb trail of caches along the Medway - accessible only from the river. The Medway is a great choice, not only because it is a quiet waterway, but it is well suited to canoeing, with canoe passes (flumes) at the locks. Some good hides, especially the one selected as the link. Good quality containers meant the logs were all dry. A great series, which also includes the companion series along the Teise.

A series of challenges which I did because I qualified for them but which turned out actually to be a splendid series in their own right. They were elegantly laid out in a clever graduation from 1.0 to 5.0 up a steady incline - the higher you got the harder they became, with the last 4 being tree free climbs :-) . There have been several additions to the "Pilgrim's Way Up" series, but this is the only one to have terrain rivalling the original. A challenging climb. I bottled out on my first visit. I nearly made it on the first try during a re-visit. Then someone offered me a climbing harness for security, and I managed to get there on my third try :-) .

Virginia Water - Breakheart Hill |
A pleasant surprise while I was walking round Virginia Water to set a cache of my own. I was expecting the lovely location, though it will be much lovelier in 3 months time than it is in the middle of January. But I wasn't expecting such a good quality, well stocked box - such things tend to be rather rare in this area. And that lifted the cache into my top 2% :-) .

For the circuit. A super series - a lovely walk, with good size caches in good hides. The link is to the first one, beside the parking, which is way out of character with the rest of the series and rather lets the side down, but don't be put off by that. Unfortunately my visit was ended halfway, when both Maisie the GeoSpaniel and myself suffered multiple bee stings, but we will be back to finish it off.

Horror Hike |
Definitely "a cache for the season" ... found at any other time of year, or in the daytime, they would lose some of the effect, but doing it on Halloween, at night and in the company of a large group of friends was exactly right. For best effect they need to be in good condition, and we were lucky to do them just after they had been maintained. All put together they were a super series, a nice location (not that we saw much of it in the dark and rain), with a good variety of hides, caches and "embellishments" :-) .
